The Vicksburg Police Department has a wide variety of skilled positions that provide for the City of Vicksburg's public safety. If you are interested in becoming a City of Vicksburg police officer, you must meet the following minimum qualifications: be at least 21 years old, have high school diploma or GED, be eligible for a state driver's license and have a good driving record. There is no minimum or maximum requirement for height and weight. You must be in good health, be of good character and reputation, and must never have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor. Applicants who meet the above criteria must also pass a series of tests that includes a written exam, a physical ability test, a medical exam including a drug screening, a background investigation, a polygraph test, and a psychological profile. Study guides are available to help candidates prepare for the written test at the library.
City of Vicksburg police officers start at an annual salary range of $35,978 to $44,700 per year, 12.375 hours per month personal leave and 8.25 hours sick leave for the first three (3) years of service; after that they accrue leave on a scale based on the number of years of continuous service. They also receive fully paid hospital and medical coverage, a retirement plan that allows retirement with twenty-five (25) years of service, group life insurance, and uniforms and equipment excluding dress shoes and undergarments. Qualified applicants will be placed on a waiting list and positions may be offered as vacancies arise.
