Ameristar Casino Executive Chef, Jerrold Brooks, and Public Relations Manager, Lori Burke, presented Jennifer Harper of the Vicksburg Senior Center, with a monetary donation and a box of fresh baked goods at the January 10th board meeting. Accompanied by a group of senior center regulars, Chef Brooks presented the baked goods to the Mayor and Aldermen. Memphis, TN (January 25, 2014) - The 30th International Blues Challenge (IBC) - the world's largest gathering of blues acts - concluded its five-day run on world famous Beale Street in downtown Memphis with a full day of performances before a full house at the Orpheum Theatre. Narrowed from a record 255 acts from 40 states and 16 countries (and four continents), the 8 solo/ duo and 9 band finalists vied for the top prizes before an esteemed panel of judges. Donald M. "Field" Brown, a double-major senior at Mississippi State, was honored by the City Board with a proclamation declaring January 6, 2014 "Donald M. Brown" Day in Vicksburg. Donald received the coveted Rhodes Scholarship which is widely considered the world's most celebrated and prestigious international fellowship. Donald credits his success, in part, to the education he received at Vicksburg High School. "I'm very honored. My classes at Vicksburg High School prepared me for my further education." said Brown as he spoke to a packed board room. {rsmediagallery tags="Donald Brown" limit="1"}

January 20, 2014: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was celebrated throughout Vicksburg beginning Saturday with a parade on Washington Street. The festivities started Monday morning with the 25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarship Breakfast at the Convention Center. Mrs. Myrlie Evers-Williams was the guest speaker and was presented with a key to the City by Mayor George Flaggs Jr. The event was sponsored by the Omicron Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  Later in the evening, Ms. Constance Slaughter-Harvey was the guest speaker at the Dr. MLK Day program at the city auditorium sponsored by the Vicksburg branch of the NAACP and the Blacks in Government organization.

Alderman Willis ThompsonWashington, D.C. – Willis Thompson, Alderman, has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2014 Finance, Administration & Intergovernmental Relations Steering Committee. This committee has the lead responsibility for developing NLC federal policy positions on issues involving national economic policy, general financial assistance programs, liability insurance, intergovernmental relations, census, municipal bonds and capital finance, municipal management, antitrust issues, citizen participation and civil rights, labor relations, Native American sovereignty and municipal authority. The appointment was announced by NLC President Chris Coleman, mayor, St. Paul, Minnesota.

Come join us Saturday, January 18, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. for the 10th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. parade in downtown Vicksburg. The parade route is along Washington Street from Veto to Jackson street. The theme for this year is "Keeping the Dream Alive".

Wednesday, January 15, 2014: Mississippi First Lady, Deborah Bryant, visited Bowmar Avenue Elementary where she read to a group of 1st grade students. The stop in Vicksburg was part of the First Lady's "Read Across MS" campaign. Because of her interest and commitment to education, Mrs. Bryant plans to read to students (K-3) in all of Mississippi's 82 counties.

VenuWorks President Steve Peters has announced the hiring of Annette Kirklin as the Executive Director of the Vicksburg Convention Center. The Vicksburg Convention Center is located in the heart of historic downtown Vicksburg, MS. The venue is managed by VenuWorks which is based in Ames, Iowa.

"I am excited to be back at the Vicksburg Convention Center and geared up for this new challenge," said Annette Kirklin. "I am ready to work with the team to begin an aggressive plan to showcase the unique venue while promoting our wonderful City of Vicksburg."
