Search Tips and Tricks

Do the search results include the contents of PDFs and other documents?

Yes.  The website indexes web pages as well as PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, and text documents.

If I search for a phrase (e.g. alarm permit), will the results only show exact matches?

No.  By default, the search results will show matches for any word within the phrase.  In this example, you would receive results for all web pages and documents that contained either the word alarm or the word permit or both.

In order to search on an exact phrase, enclose your search phrase in quotations.  The search results for "alarm permit" will show matches for that exact phrase.

Can I exclude a word from a search (e.g. all pages that have the word "alarm" but not the word "permit"?

Yes.   You can exclude words by using the minus sign (-).   In order to find the results of all pages that have alarm in the result but not permit, you would search for alarm -permit.

sewer

What Can You Do To Help?

Never pour grease down a sink or drain. Kitchen grease should be placed in a small can and disposed of with household garbage. Never open or allow children to open a manhole cover. Toxic gases may collect in the system that could cause sickness or even death. Open manholes pose a real hazard to the public, particularly children at play. If you see a manhole cover off, contact the sewer department so that they can safely return them to their proper place. Covers are heavy and the crews have special hooks to replace them without causing injury to anyone. Never place objects in the system that don’t belong there. These include leaves, sticks, broken furniture, appliances and toys as well as plastic articles of any type. They are difficult to remove and can damage equipment or obstruct the flow of sewer and storm water. If you see or suspect a sewer leak, please report it promptly to the department. Every effort will be made to address these problems as soon as possible. Conserve water whenever possible. This helps in two ways. First, it assures that our supply of clean water will be available for future generations. It also helps to lower your monthly bill for both water and sewer treatment and disposal. Grass clippings can be bagged and disposed off or used for compost at your home. Placing them in the drain at the curb limits the amount of space for storm water to flow to, and prevents it from leaving your property due to stoppages. Teach your children that sewer lines and manholes are dangerous places to play near, but help them to understand their benefits and how to help protect our environment and our water resources.

What You Get For The Fee You Pay?

The sewer department is responsible for the conveyance of domestic and industrial wastewater and the collection and disposal of storm water. But did you know that it also maintains and mans the pumping system and flood gates that border the Yazoo Diversion Canal in our Town? During the periods of the year that the Mississippi River rises above flood stage the sewer department places the flood gates in the flood wall and mans and maintains the pumping system that prevents flooding of many businesses and streets in the downtown area and along the entrance to the waterfront. All these services and the treatment and disposal of wastewater as well as the recycling of biosolids on local agricultural land are paid for by the user fees collected each month from our customers. So you see that actually multiple departments and their associated duties are funded by the small fees that the customers pay each month. The sewer fees customers pay are based on their water consumption.

Why Sewer Service Is Important?

The proper conveyance and treatment of sewer is vital for the protection of public health. The addition of sewer service at a home or business also increases the property values. Many industries could not operate in our city without the conveyance of their pretreated liquid wastes and the eventual treatment and final disposal into the Mississippi River. The sewer department serves 9,350 customers through 300 miles of line. All this is accomplished by a dedicated staff of 19 men. Several of these men are available 24/7 to address the needs of the customers.

What is Government Access TV (GATV)?

Government Access Television is programming produced primarily by city, county, state and federal agencies and employees. Programs run the gamut from live coverage of Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen meetings to city informational programs such as "Vicksburg Notes" and Public Service Announcements. GATV, Cable Channel 23, is owned and operated by the City of Vicksburg. As part of the cable franchise agreement with Vicksburg Video the cable operator pays the city for the use of the public right of ways. These funds, known as franchise fees, are used to support cable related activities. A portion of these funds is exclusively used to support Government Access Television. The GATV channel can be viewed in the City of Vicksburg on Vicksburg Video Cable Channel 23. For more information call 601-801-2300.

water and gas

Do you have a gas safety pamphlet?

Yes we do. Use our download area to view and print the pamphlet.

How do I calculate my water bill?

The water consumption printed on your utility bill represents your water usage in thousands* of gallons. So a bill that shows a consumption of 14 means that you used 14,000 gallons during the billing cycle. To calculate your water charge you need to find the correct Water Rate Chart and minimum bill for your account.

Sample taken from Residential-Inside City Limits Rates.

Billed Consumption of 14 or 14,000 gallons
First 2,000 gallons is $10.06 (Minimum Bill)
The next 8,000 Gallons is $3.07 per thousand
The next 10,000 gallons are $2.66 per thousand

First 2 = $10.06
Next 8*$3.07= $24.56
Next 4*$2.66= $10.64 B

Bill for 14 consumption: $10.06 + $24.56 + $10.64 = $45.26

*Some accounts have large meters that our billing system adds a multiplier to before calculating the bill.

How do I check for a water leak?

Water leaks can cost you hundreds of dollars over a period of time and can be hard to detect. Toilets that run, faucets that leak and faulty hot-water heaters are usually the main source of problems. You can download a Water Leak Pamphlet using our "Downloads" section.

Why is my bill so high?

Your water bill is calculated using the total number of gallons you used during the billing cycle. There are many factors that can cause your water charge to be high. Water conservation is the simplest thing you can do to safeguard against a high water bill. Things that you should look for are leaking faucets, running toilets, broken pipes, leaving the water running while washing your vehicle, and watering plants and lawns. A simple thing such as a dripping faucet or running toilet can use hundreds even thousands of gallons in a months time.
