Firefighting in today's society is both challenging and exciting. Today's fire service offers a diverse array of technical and emergency response challenges which comprise a highly rewarding community service career. If you are interested in becoming a City of Vicksburg firefighter you must meet the following minimum qualifications: be at least 21 years old, possess a 17 on the ACT or a minimum compass score of 70, have a SAT score in the 780-800 range or be a nationally registry certified Emergency Medical Technician and be eligible for a state driver's license and have a good driving record. Applicants also must have 20/20 vision or eyesight corrected to 20/25. You must be in good health, be of good character and reputation, and must never have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.Applicants who meet the above criteria must also pass a series of tests that includes a written exam, a physical ability test, and a psychological examination. Study guides are available to help candidates prepare for the written test. City of Vicksburg firefighters start at a competitive annual salary, with annual increases based on merit and training. They accrue 16.8 hours of personal leave and 11.20 sick leave per month for the first three years of employment; after that, employees accrue leave on a scale based on the number of years of continuous service. City of Vicksburg Firefighters also receive fully paid hospital and medical coverage, a retirement system that allows retirement with thirty (30) years of service, group life insurance, and uniforms and equipment excluding dress shoes and undergarments. Qualified applicants will be placed on a waiting list and positions may be offered as vacancies arise.
